The Brothers Karamazov is a novel with a simple plot about a murder, and a complex discussion of faith, doubt, and morality. Captain Snegiryov follows him and bows low to him. Ivan says that there isn’t one, while Alexei says that there is one. He had no right to do that and should’ve just asked Katerina Ivanovna for the money. Pyotr Fomich Kalganov, a witness to the crime, arrives. Rakitin teases her for being too sentimental; she says that Alexei is grieving and rebelling against God, but she has no excuse not to be drinking right now. Alyosha, who understands his brothers and his father better than most people think, greatly fears the meeting. He also hated his father for giving him money instead of land and wanted to kill him out of spite. The feeling is mutual, but Katerina insists she has to save Dmitri. There, he met Zosima who is now dying due to disease and weakness. Plot Keywords His father never treated him like a son and he developed a strange personality because of it. Lyagavy is lean with an oblong face, which makes Dmitri hate him even more because he has so much power over them all now. He arrives at the train station and is surrounded by coachmen, who haggle over a fee to take him to Chermashnya. Ivan falls ill and is taken to the hospital. Ivan thinks Smerdyakov’s plan is too neat and tidy. Ivan says that if Smerdyakov thinks that Dmitri will try to use those signals, then it must not happen. He offers Alexei coffee, which he refuses because he’s fasting; however, Fyodor convinces him to have a cup. They honor those who have more but also demand that they be regarded as men equally worthy of respect. Samsonov tells him that it would be better if he went and offered Lyagavy in Sukhoy Possyolok instead because he is more likely to accept an offer from someone who lives nearby than from a stranger like Dmitri. Lise’s mother then enters the room. The district attorney asks for confirmation of the fact that he disliked his father and was in dispute with him before they continue their talk about the murder. The town was abuzz with the news that Colonel Rostov had a second daughter. She lied when she said she would stop seeing Dmitri because she still loves him (and we learn later on why). Finally, it seemed like Dmitri wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. The jury finds him guilty and sentences him to exile in Siberia for fifteen years. She does, but won’t come this morning. Chapters 6–7, - Dmitri laughs at the remark and says that he’s going to Mokroye. The colonel in charge of that town disliked Dmitri because the colonel’s first wife left him with a daughter named Agafya Ivanovna. Ivan returns from Moscow, and Alyosha tells him Dmitri is innocent. Chapters 1–2, - Alexei is surprised that Rakitin was at Katerina’s house while Ivan was talking about him. He donated them to a local almshouse for people who needed it. Alexei mentions that Rakitin wants to write an article about Dmitri, but it will be very negative. Ivan tells Katerina about what had happened. Chaos breaks out in the courtroom. He isn’t sure how to respond. Fyodor Pavlovich never has any interest in his sons, and when their mothers die, he sends them away to be brought up by relatives … He died when the author (the elder) was two years old and left his mother with a small wooden house and money. Dmitri sits in his carriage. Smerdyakov admits he killed old Karamazov and kills himself. Dmitri dozed off and fell asleep. Smerdyakov says murder may occur and urges Ivan to leave. Just then, the lieutenant came in with pistols and took him to the site of the duel. Alexei says yes. The elder listens to her with a smile on his face and gives her a tender blessing before sending Alexei to see her later that day. However, Father Ferapont continues condemning Zosima for not fasting while still calling everything nonsense and incoherently saying things like “a-a-ah” before leaving once again into his own room where everyone can hear him talking loudly through walls (because it’s made of wood) about how terrible those people are ruining everything by introducing new ideas which will destroy religion forever…. Pyotr Alexandrovich also wants to join them because he thinks it will improve his lawsuit with the monastery over their boundaries of land, wood-cutting rights and fishing in the river. Dmitri bets two hundred roubles the first hand, wins it, and quickly starts doubling his bets. Dmitri responded to Katerina’s letter and said that he was poor, but she is now rich. Zosima tells him not to cry yet because there are twenty years left in his life. Ivan says that Jesus approaches the cardinal and kisses him gently on his bloodless, ninety-year-old lips. At first, he refuses because they only come for dancing sessions but eventually agrees to arrange something. Fetyukovich says that Dmitri did not kill his father. It’s a coincidence that they all end up at the police commissioner’s house that night to discuss Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov’s murder. Everyone was shocked by what they heard because it seemed like she gave him those gifts willingly since they were friends before she died. Half an hour after this, at three o’clock in the morning, all lights are switched off inside and outside of the houses except for one lamp or candle by which Fyodor is walking up and down impatiently on the landing trying hard to hear any noise made before knocking on Smerdyakov’s door as part of what looks like some kind trance similar to sleepwalking but focused entirely on making sure he does not get distracted from his pre-set schedule of knocks prior to finally waking up Ivan who falls asleep during these events through sheer boredom while listening carefully before going back to sleep again afterwards yet still well aware and able to remember every small detail even when pretending otherwise later.
