Imagine if Control took over someone anyone cared about — and no, poor Airiam (Hannah Cheesman) doesn’t count, since the show did the lame Walking Dead trick of only turning Airiam into a full-fledged character just in time to kill her. As much as it probably pained him, he gave Starfleet the recommendation that forbade anyone talk about Discovery, the spore drive, or the time travel suit or else everything Michael and the Discovery did would have been in vain. If this is what Star Trek: Discovery looks like when it properly treats Michael like the main character she ostensibly is, then keep it coming. Credit Mount for bringing low-key good humor to a show that usually aims for rap-rock extremes of emotion. The most touching part of the finale was when Spock and Michael have their final goodbye. Great fun! The answer comes quickly, via Michael’s viewing of her mother’s vlogs (don’t @ me—Dr. A poorly executed show centred around the unbelievable, unlikable character of Michael Burnham. Infected by Control, she sacrifices herself to save Burham and company. Over two seasons, we’ve seen Michael grow from an insecure woman who didn’t know her place between her Earthling and Vulcan upbringings to a brilliant, emotional, empathetic leader. We know. Before Dr. Burnham gets pulled back through the wormhole that tethers her to the far future, she looks doubtful—not because she doubts her daughter’s love or motivation, but because she perhaps overestimates time, an entity that she has come to personify as tough, savage, and extremely powerful in her time traveling it. She was the kind of character who would mention, without fuss, that her wife died in the Klingon war. “We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’”. Control has always been one step ahead of her—even though Dr. Burnham has the ability to travel through time, Control has A.I. But the finale struggled against the long, dodgy season of science-fiction TV that preceded it. She’s an admirable character, and I’m proud to know that someone like her is a shining beacon in the Starfleet pantheon of characters. They’ve added a strained veneer of hip, deadpan goofiness that feels more CW teen drama than Trek. (Discovery talked a big game last year about the dangers of militarization, but it remains oddly dedicated to the idea that peaceful races need to cowboy up and start spacefighting. CBS All Access' show 'Star Trek Discovery' had a disappointing finale to Season 1. Spock’s advice is a near-quote of a memorable line from The Simpsons. Star Trek: Discovery ended its second season Thursday with a twist that could decisively alter the prequel’s troubled course. The second season of the American television series Star Trek: Discovery is set roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series and follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they investigate seven mysterious signals. I didn’t know what to expect. A fun, nostalgic, energetic re-entry that makes up for that sometimes bloated bore of a first season.
